about counselling
- Counselling sessions are by appointment, usually weekly and last for an hour. The number of sessions will vary from client to client. This is negotiable and subject to regular review. Once sessions have started it is important to attend regularly so as to maintain the continuity of the work.
- Counselling respects all individuals, regardless of gender, race, sexuality and beliefs. The relationship between counsellor and client is one of equality.
- Confidentiality - anything you discuss will be kept in strict confidence. There is an exception - if a client's life is at risk or there is a risk to others, the counsellor would discuss with the client how another professional, such as a GP, is informed.
- Counselling is uninterrupted time, just for you. You are able to talk through issues with a trained listener, so as to work towards living in a way that is more satisfying and resourceful.
- Counselling is not about being given advice and told what or what not to do. With support you are encouraged to discover your own strengths and resources which will enable you to find your own solutions.
